First-time home buyers will continue to receive a tax credit of up to $8,000, while existing homeowners will receive a credit of up to $6,500. Existing homeowners will be eligible for the $6,500 if they have lived in their current residence for at least five years, and want to move into a new primary residence. The bill also will increase the qualifying income limits from $75,000 for single tax filers and $150,000 for joint filers to $125,000 and $225,000, respectively. The purchase price of the home is capped at $800,000.
President Obama with the approval of Congress, signed into law on February 17, 2009 a new American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) as part of the stimulus package to get our economy going again. The Recovery Act includes a measure to help the first-time homebuyer buy a home and as an incentive you will receive a $8,000 tax credit. This tax credit helps you the qualified buyer, achieve the dream of owning your own home, so instead of looking at the white picket fence, now you can own the fence.
All eligible home buyers can claim the credit on their tax return using Form 5405. For more information please contact a tax advisor. Home buyers do not have to repay the credit provided the home remains their primary residence for 3 years after purchasing. This information is subject to change.
